It starts as a faint golden tint around the base of a cleat or along a rail weld. A few weeks later, the whole bow rail has a brown film, and orange streaks are running down the gelcoat below it. You bought marine stainless because it doesn’t rust, but in salt air it does, just on the surface.
That brown film is called tea staining. Salt and moisture attack the thin protective layer on the metal, and surface corrosion forms where it breaks down. Caught early, it cleans off completely. Left for months, it can turn into pitting: tiny craters in the metal that hold salt, stain again quickly and can’t be polished out. The rust streaks also stain the gelcoat and non-skid underneath, which turns one problem into two.
This service restores and protects the stainless hardware on your boat. We remove tea staining and surface corrosion with a marine stainless cleaner, polish the metal to bring back its bright finish, then apply a protective coating that slows salt from attacking it again.
It covers everything from bow and stern rails to cleats, grab handles, rod holders, ladders and hinges. It can be booked on its own, added to a wash or wax, or included in a full detail or maintenance plan.
We also clean the rust streaks left on the gelcoat below the hardware, so the boat looks right around the metal too.
These three are often confused. Each does a different job:
Light golden tint
Brown film, orange streaks on gelcoat
Rough spots, staining that returns in days
Visible craters, heavy rust at welds or fittings
Early surface staining
Established tea staining
Early pitting
Advanced pitting or crevice corrosion
Cleans off fully, bright finish
Cleans off, streaks removed from gelcoat
Big improvement; pits may still show up
Cleaned and protected; replacement may be the better long-term fix
We’ll tell you which stage your hardware is in before quoting, and if a part is past saving we’ll say so.
Rails and fittings go back to a clean, bright finish, which lifts the look of the whole boat.
A protective coating keeps salt off the metal, so tea staining takes much longer to come back.
Removing surface corrosion before it goes deeper protects the metal from permanent damage.
No more orange streaks running down the hull or into the non-skid.
Marine stainless hardware is expensive to replace. Keeping it clean and protected makes it last the life of the boat.

A boat with a T-top, rails and rod holders has far more metal than a bare bowrider.
Established staining and early pitting take more time to treat.
Heavy rust streaks below the hardware add cleaning time.
Adding stainless care to a wash, wax or detail saves setup time

Wax is sacrificial. It breaks down so your gelcoat doesn’t, and in Tampa Bay it breaks down faster than the label suggests. Year-round UV, salt spray, and frequent freshwater rinses all wear it away, and boats on uncovered lifts lose protection fastest on the side facing the afternoon sun.
That’s why we set waxing intervals based on how and where you keep your boat, not a generic calendar. A Gulf-side slip, a covered boathouse, and a garage-kept trailer boat each need a different schedule.
Tea staining is easiest to fix early. Send a few photos of your rails and fittings and we’ll tell you what it will take, what result to expect and what it will cost.
